Lakcímkártya (Address Card)

The lakcímkártya is a Hungarian address registration card. It documents your registered address in Hungary and is required for many practical purposes — from opening a bank account to enrolling children in school to accessing certain services.

Who Needs It​

The lakcímkártya is relevant if you:

  • Plan to spend significant time in Hungary
  • Are relocating to Hungary
  • Need to register a Hungarian address for any practical or administrative purpose

If you are staying abroad and have no plans to use Hungarian services or register an address, you may not need it immediately.

How to Get It​

The lakcímkártya is obtained at a kormányablak (government service office) in Hungary, not at the consulate abroad. You need to be physically present in Hungary to obtain it.

What you need:

  • Proof of Hungarian citizenship (passport or certificate of citizenship)
  • A valid address in Hungary to register (your own property, or a declaration from the property owner allowing registration)

The key community finding: You can obtain the lakcímkártya without waiting for the Hungarian birth certificate to arrive. One community member documented exactly this situation:

"I got my lakcímkártya without my birth certificate. I told them that I requested one at the time of applying for naturalization, and it never came (over a year later!)."

If your birth certificate is delayed, do not let that stop you from registering your address if you need to.

Registering an Address​

To register, you need an actual Hungarian address. Options:

  • Your own property in Hungary
  • A family member's property (with their written consent)
  • Rented accommodation (landlord must agree to register you)
  • In some cases, a service address can be arranged

Short-term visitors staying in hotels are not typically registered — lakcím registration implies a more permanent or semi-permanent connection to the address.

After Registration​

Once registered, the lakcímkártya enables:

  • Enrollment in the Hungarian healthcare system (TAJ-szám)
  • School enrollment for children
  • Opening a Hungarian bank account
  • Various administrative processes that require a Hungarian address

Updating Your Address​

If you move within Hungary, you must update your registration at a kormányablak. Keeping your registered address current is a legal requirement for residents.
