Legal Reference

Hungarian citizenship by descent is governed by three primary legal documents. This section describes each one and explains what it regulates.

The Three Core Documents

The Fundamental Law of Hungary (2011) The constitution. Establishes the constitutional basis for citizenship — who is a citizen, the principle of protection of citizens abroad, and the prohibition on arbitrary deprivation of citizenship.

Act LV of 1993 on Hungarian Citizenship The main citizenship law. Defines all conditions for acquiring, retaining, and losing Hungarian citizenship. Covers simplified naturalization, verification of citizenship, language requirements, and the application procedure.

Government Decree No. 125/1993 (IX. 22.) Korm. The implementing regulation for Act LV. Sets out the procedural details: document requirements, how applications are submitted, the role of consulates, and administrative timelines.

How to Use This Section
