How to Apply

Where to Submit

Applications for simplified naturalization can be submitted in two ways:

At a Hungarian consulate abroad — the standard path for applicants living outside Hungary. The consulate receives your documents, conducts the interview, and forwards the file to Budapest for decision.

At a kormányablak in Hungary — for applicants who are residing in or traveling to Hungary. Be aware that the Budapest process is generally stricter than consulates abroad. See Applying in Hungary.

You are not required to apply at the consulate closest to your home. You can choose any Hungarian consulate. See Consulates for a comparison.

What to Bring

At the appointment you submit:

  • completed application form (honosítási kérelem) — in Hungarian
  • birth certificate of the applicant
  • birth and marriage certificates for each generation in the chain
  • documents establishing the ancestor's Hungarian citizenship
  • proof of identity (valid passport or ID)

The consulate reviews the documents and conducts the interview on the same visit.

The Interview

The interview is conducted in Hungarian. It is both a language assessment and a document review. The consulate officer will verify your identity, go through the submitted documents, and have a conversation in Hungarian.

At some consulates (particularly LA), you may be asked to write a short CV (önéletrajz) in Hungarian at the appointment. Prepare this in advance.

See Language Requirement for what is assessed.

After Submission

The consulate does not make the final decision. Your file is forwarded to the central authority in Budapest (Belügyminisztérium / Ministry of Interior), which evaluates eligibility, documentation, and language compliance.

If additional documents are needed, the Budapest office may request them — either through the consulate or directly.

You will not receive status updates during processing. See Timelines for what to expect.
