Language Requirement

Simplified naturalization requires that the applicant can communicate in Hungarian. This is the one condition that cannot be satisfied with documents — it must be demonstrated in person, during the appointment.

What the Law Says

Act LV of 1993 requires that the applicant "communicate in Hungarian." The law does not specify a proficiency level, a standardized test, or a grading method. Assessment is left to the consulate officer.

The official reference is B1 on the Common European Framework (CEFR). In practice, community experience shows that applicants who pass typically function at A2–B1 level with interview-specific preparation — conversational ability focused on the topics that come up, not broad academic fluency.

What Is Assessed

The assessment takes place during the appointment itself — it is not a separate exam. The officer evaluates you while reviewing your documents and conducting the interview.

They are looking for:

  • Can you understand questions spoken in Hungarian?
  • Can you respond coherently and stay on topic?
  • Can you discuss your family history and reasons for applying?
  • Are your statements consistent with your documents?

Perfect grammar is not required. Sustained, coherent communication is. The interview is an administrative evaluation, not an academic examination.

Topics That Come Up

Based on community experience, the interview typically covers:

  • Tell me about yourself (personal background)
  • Your family and the Hungarian ancestor
  • Why do you want Hungarian citizenship
  • Your interests, daily life, work

At some consulates (particularly LA), you may be asked to write a short CV (önéletrajz) in Hungarian on the spot. Prepare a written self-introduction in advance and practice it.

How Long Does It Take to Prepare

Most adults starting from zero report reaching interview-ready level in 1–2 years with consistent study. This varies significantly based on study method, hours per week, and prior language learning experience.

Variation Between Consulates

Language expectations vary meaningfully by consulate:

  • Chicago — described as the most lenient; pre-interview call to screen before scheduling the appointment
  • Los Angeles — most thorough; 90 minutes entirely in Hungarian
  • Budapest — strictest
