Simplified Naturalization
Simplified naturalization (egyszerűsített honosítás) is the procedure by which a descendant of a Hungarian citizen acquires Hungarian citizenship. It is called "simplified" because it does not require residence in Hungary — the application is submitted through a consulate abroad.
Who It Is For
This path applies when you have a Hungarian citizen ancestor and the citizenship chain was interrupted at some point — meaning citizenship was not transmitted continuously to you. You are not already a citizen; you are applying to become one.
If you believe citizenship may have been transmitted to you uninterrupted, see Verification of Citizenship instead.
Key Requirements
- At least one ancestor held Hungarian citizenship
- You can communicate in Hungarian (assessed at the consulate interview)
- Your naturalization does not threaten Hungarian national security or public order
What This Section Covers
The articles in this section walk through each stage of simplified naturalization:
- Eligibility — who qualifies, what counts as a Hungarian ancestor, borderline cases
- Proof of Lineage — what documents you need, how to handle missing or inconsistent records
- Language Requirement — what is assessed, how to prepare, what happens if refused
- Procedure — where to apply, the steps, timelines, the oath
- Practice — how consulates exercise discretion, what the law says vs. what happens
- Refusal & Reapplication — grounds for refusal and what to do next
