Verification Procedure
The verification procedure is simpler than simplified naturalization in two important ways: there is no language requirement, and the process can realistically be completed without professional assistance in straightforward cases.
Overview of Steps
- Assess eligibility (see Eligibility)
- Gather documents (see Documents)
- Schedule an appointment at the chosen consulate
- Submit the application
- Wait for the decision from Budapest
- Receive confirmation of citizenship status
- Apply for Hungarian documents (passport, ID)
No Language Requirement
Verification does not include a Hungarian language interview. The appointment at the consulate is administrative — you submit your documents, answer basic questions about your application, and leave.
This is the main practical difference from simplified naturalization. You do not need to learn Hungarian to complete this process (though being able to communicate basic information in Hungarian is helpful at consulates where English is limited).
Doing It Yourself
Verification is consistently described in the community as something you can complete independently:
"Just letting group members know you can do this alone — no need to hire anyone. None of my English documents needed to be translated. The overall process just takes time and patience but worth it."
This applies primarily to straightforward cases — where the chain is clear, documents are available, and no significant legal questions arise. Complex situations (ambiguous 1929 eligibility, the 1957 women's rule, or significant document gaps) may benefit from legal guidance.
Choosing a Consulate
The Los Angeles consulate is specifically mentioned in community experience as well-suited for verification cases. The process there is described as manageable and professional.
As with all consulates, you are generally not required to apply at the location closest to your residence. See Consulates for a full comparison.
Timelines
Verification timelines are broadly similar to simplified naturalization — and similarly unpredictable.
Community data suggests:
- Median processing time: approximately 10 months
- Range: 6 to 18+ months
- No status updates during processing is the norm — the Budapest office does not proactively communicate
One documented case: an applicant waited a year and a half with no contact, despite a "straightforward" case with complete documents. This is not unusual.
If your application appears stalled, the Budapest processing office can be contacted at apmeg@bfkh.gov.hu with your case number. Responses are not guaranteed, but community experience suggests that contact sometimes prompts movement on a stalled file.
After the Decision
If verification is approved:
- You receive official confirmation of citizenship status
- You can then apply for a Hungarian passport and ID card at the consulate
- Your children may be entitled to citizenship as well — confirm with the consulate
For next steps after citizenship is confirmed — passport, ID card, Hungarian birth certificate — these are covered in the After Citizenship section (coming soon).
If Your Case Is Complex
For cases involving legal uncertainty — particularly around the 1929 emigration rule or the pre-1957 women's marriage rule — professional legal advice is worth considering before investing time in document collection. A specialist familiar with Hungarian citizenship law can assess whether verification is actually available for your specific situation, which may save significant time and effort compared to discovering the problem at the consulate stage.
