Verification vs Simplified Naturalization
Two distinct legal mechanisms exist for addressing Hungarian citizenship by descent:
- verification of existing citizenship;
- simplified naturalization.
Understanding the difference is essential before proceeding.
Verification
Verification applies where citizenship already exists under the law, but documentation is missing.
It requires proof that:
- citizenship was transmitted continuously;
- no loss occurred;
- the applicant is already a citizen by operation of law.
Verification does not create citizenship. It confirms an existing legal status.
Simplified Naturalization
Simplified naturalization applies where:
- an ancestor held Hungarian citizenship;
- the applicant is a descendant;
- statutory requirements are met.
This procedure results in a new decision granting citizenship.
Choosing the Correct Path
The determining factor is whether uninterrupted transmission can be demonstrated.
If transmission was interrupted, verification is not available.
If transmission was uninterrupted, verification may be possible.
Applicants often assume simplified naturalization is always required, even when their legal situation may qualify for verification.
